Mumbai Gunmen killed at least 101 people in a series of attacks in India’s financial capital Mumbai and troops began moving into two five-star hotels on Thursday where Western hostages were being held, local television said.

Gunfire and explosions were heard at the landmark Taj Mahal hotel and thick plumes of smoke rose from the building, witnesses said. There were also explosions at the Oberoi hotel and firing at a hospital where gunmen were surrounded.

MUMBAI TERROR ATTACK Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh address nation

“The terrorists are throwing grenades at us from the rooftop of the Taj and trying to stop us from moving in,” Ashok Patil, a police inspector said.

Police said at least 600 people were wounded in the attacks which also targeted a railway station and the Cafe Leopold, perhaps the most famous restaurant and hang-out for tourists in the city.

An organisation calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen said it was behind attacks, television channels said. The previously little known group sent an email to news organisations claiming responsibility.

“I guess they were after foreigners, because they were asking for British or American passports,” said Rakesh Patel, a British witness who lives in Hong Kong and was staying at the Taj Mahal hotel on business. “They had bombs.”

“They came from the restaurant and took us up the stairs,” he told a TV news channel, smoke stains all over his face. “Young boys, maybe 20 years old, 25 years old. They had two guns.”

India has suffered a wave of bomb attacks in recent years.

The latest attack, apparently aimed at least partly at prosperous Western tourists, is bound to spook investors in one of Asia’s largest and fastest-growing economies.

Hemant Karkare, the chief of the police anti-terrorist squad in Mumbai, was killed during the attacks, police said.

“We have shot dead four terrorists and managed to arrest nine suspected terrorists,” PD Ghadge, a police officer at Mumbai’s central control room, told Reuters.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry said one of its nationals was killed in the Mumbai attacks and one injured.

TRAPPED HOTEL GUESTS

Mark Abell, a British lawyer, said he had locked himself inside his Oberoi hotel room after hearing two explosions.

Several hundred people had been evacuated from the Taj hotel, one witness said, but many more remained inside, some calling for help from the fifth floor. Firefighters broke windows to reach trapped guests.

“We came down the fire exit, but I think they took some more people, they are trying to get to the roof,” one foreigner told local television. “I think about 15 people (have been taken hostage), about half of them are foreigners.”

In Washington, the White House and US President-elect Barack Obama condemned the attacks, as did France, current President of the European Union, and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

A European official was among the wounded.

“My hotel is surrounded by police and there are gunmen inside,” European lawmaker Ignasi Guardans told Spanish radio from the Taj. “We are in contact with some deputies inside the hotel, with one in a room and another hidden in the kitchen. There’s another official hurt and in hospital.”

Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil said there were around four or five attackers in each of the two hotels.

“They have attacked hotels, they have attacked the hospitals, they have attacked the railway station,” he said.

KOREANS, EUROPEANS CAUGHT UP IN ATTACKS

A driver told Reuters at least 50 Koreans were stuck inside the Taj with their drivers waiting outside.

“We were just getting ready to pick them up, when we heard the first blast, police did not let us get past and they (the Koreans) are not answering the phones,” Deepak Aswar, the driver said. Europeans were also caught up in the attacks.

“I was in the restaurant inside Oberoi and I saw this series of gunshots and death which I don’t want to see again,” a Spaniard who declined to give his name told Reuters.

“I crawled out into the kitchen and waited there, until I sensed it was all quiet and seemed over.”

Maharashtra state police chief A.N. Roy said attackers had fired automatic weapons indiscriminately, and used grenades, adding that they were still holed up in some buildings.

Sourav Mishra, a Reuters reporter, was with friends at the Cafe Leopold when gunmen opened fire around 9:30 p.m. He was injured and is in St George’s Hospital.

“I heard some gunshots around 9:30. I was with my friends. Something hit me. I ran away and fell on the road. Then somebody picked me up. I have injuries below my shoulder,” Mishra said from a hospital bed he was sharing with three other people.

Another Reuters reporter saw a hospital ward full of injured people with bullet and shrapnel wounds. Many people were crying as the injured were brought in on trolleys.

3. recently even the Bali bombers convicted were executed in front of a firing squad! And mind you Indonesia is a muslim country. They have the guts to do that, what stops us?

After putting my though on so many thread i had stopped talking on Raj Thakre episode.

But i just wanted to put my view through this blog.

First let us conclude that after the entire episode who will be gainer and looser?

Of course Mr. Thakre will be achiever and aam Maraathi Manush will be looser.

Let me explain remember Ms Mayabati In early days she was quite unknown figure and to be popular she had started abusing upper caste. Naturally backward class(was victim) and they followed her blindly and as a result she become popular. Once she achieved maximum mileage from backward class(maximum extent) suddenly she started talking for reservation to upper Cast. Because to go high from this point she needs more support from various section. So she has taken u turn and become Prime minister condidates.

So naturally she had nothing to do with the development of any class.

Similar politics or better getting inspired by this Mr. Thakre started a movement and got support from non competitive people of mMaharastra. So Mr. Thakre will be a gainer and ……

Either Raj or Bal Thackeray, or a Mayawati, or an Advani or a Hitler chose their methods it is not without basis though unjustified!

To stir up masses love doesnt work; it is the hatred that unites the people. All these politicians are not idiots or ignorant as these pseudo journos often portray!

They are adopting time tested techniques that result in fruits.

Hitler used hatred against jews effectively to unite ignorant masses of Germany, Advani uses his rhetoric against Muslims to unite Hindu masses and Raj & Bal Thackeray uses hatred against North Indians to unite the masses of Maharastrians to perpetuate their goals!

Hatred yields quick results, Love takes a lot of time and the circumstances should be helpful which happens rarely as it did when Mahatma Gandhi spread his agitation using love and peace.

That is why Gandhi is starkly different from any other mass leader; he never used hatred but used love and peace. That is why Gandhi stands tall ahead of all!

4. Also V.C of Jamia which is a part of government is funding to fight the leagal case of the terrorist.
5. Mr. Amar Singh had expressed doubts over the genuineness of the encounter and went to the extent of saying the Sharma could have been killed by his colleagues.

• Who will fight for the thousands of family victim of these blast?

• Who will arrange the bread and butter of the family whose only earning member are no more?

• Should congress govt’s hand is with Aam aadmi or with terrorist?

One of our best Prime minister of India Mr. Rajiv Gandhi(I was fan of Mr. Gandhi), Indira Gandhi all were vicims of these terrorist act but still there hand is with terrorist.

NEW DELHI: Hurt by the “insensitive” remarks of Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh questioning the Jamia Nagar encounter, the family of Inspector M
ohan Chand Sharma has refused to accept the Rs 10 lakh cheque that Singh had sent them after the police officer died in the operation.

“His comments have hurt our honour and disrespected my late husband. We did not go begging to Singh and we will not accept the cheque now that he has publicly said that he gave us money — as if I am making my husband’s death an excuse to earn money,” said an angry Maya Sharma, widow of the officer.

Singh had expressed doubts over the genuineness of the encounter and went to the extent of saying the Sharma could have been killed by his colleagues.

Interestingly, the cheque that was handed out to the family had an error in it. “In numbers, the amount mentioned on the cheque was Rs 10,000, while Rs 10 lakh was written in words. When we brought this to Singh’s representative’s notice, he asked us to add two zeros to the cheque on our own. She added that I told him that such things are not befitting of respectable people like us. I thought it was an honest mistake. So, after we insisted, his representative took the cheque back for correction. Now, we don’t want it back,” said Maya.

She added that her entire family was so upset by Singh’s statements that they were not even willing to let him enter the premises of their society. “This is all just a political gimmick to attract votes. We will not allow our family’s honour and my husband’s sacrifice to be trivialized this way. Singh is heading a political party and yet speaks like an uneducated man and forget about an apology, we want nothing to do with him anymore,” she said.

Maya was most unhappy about two comments that Singh made. “He said that my husband was a martyr indeed, but no one knew whether he was killed by the terrorists or the police themselves. Then Singh said that he was removed from his position in the special cell. Did he mean that he was fired from his job or did he know he was transferred and still went there to die leaving behind his family and his ailing son? Did Singh see his fellow cops shooting him dead?” she asked.

Maya said Singh had made a mockery of her husband’s death when the entire nation recognizes it as a supreme sacrifice in the service of the country. “When we, being his family, don’t know about his supposed transfer, how does Singh know? Was he closer to him than us? He has insulted my deceased husband and our self respect besides opening up our wounds again by these irresponsible statements,” she said.

Sharma’s father, Narottam, also expressed his pain over the remarks. “I am deeply saddened by the comments made by Singh. My son sacrificed his life for the nation and with his ‘generous’ gesture, he was trying to serve his political motives and aspirations. We have refused to accept the money given by Singh as I will not allow politicians to make a mockery of my son’s death,” he said.

A senior city lawyer expressed shock over Singh’s statement and said that Sharma was in the investigating officer in Singh’s phone tapping case. “Singh trusted him and his department enough to let them handle the case and yet, now he is accusing them of killing Sharma. Under section 449 of the Indian Penal Code, it is an offence to make defamatory statements against a dead person punishable by two years. How can he just so casually say such things?” he said.

Meanwhile, Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit visited the Sharma residence in Dwarka on Monday morning and assured the family of complete support from the government.

Delhi Police PRO, ACP Rajan Bhagat, confirmed that Sharma was not being transferred out of the special cell at the time of his death. Irate supporters of Sharma gathered outside Singh’s residence at Lodhi Colony shouting slogans against him on Monday for making such statements.

Singh had made the comments while on a visit to Jamia Nagar where he spoke to local leaders and demanded a judicial probe into the encounter.
