Eating fish may reduce the occurrence of kidney disease in diabetics.

Studies in the past have shown that fish and fish oil consumption is beneficial in managing diabetes. To examine whether or not fish helps preventing kidney disease in individuals with or without diabetes, researchers from Britain studied 22,384 men and women out of which 517 were diabetic. The researchers used food frequency questionnaires to know the consumption of fish by the participants.

It was found that among the 517 diabetics, the presence of gross albumin (protein) in the urine (macroalbuminuria), an indication of advanced kidney disease, was 8.3 percent compared to 0.6% in non-diabetics. Microalbuminuria (presence of small amounts of albumin in urine – an indicator of early kidney damage) was 23% in diabetics, compared to 11% in non-diabetics. According to food questionnaire responses, 18 percent of diabetics who ate fish less than once a week had macroalbuminuria, versus 4 percent of those who included fish in their diet more than twice a week. After adjusting the data for clinical, social, demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors, regular fish consumption remained a significant predictor of freedom from macroalbuminuria among diabetics.

The above findings could be attributed to the fact that fish has a unique nutrient composition that might prevent kidney damage by enhancing blood sugar control or improving lipid profiles.

Further studies are expected to resolve the types of fish, modes of preparation, and dietary frequency to best protect the kidneys of patients with diabetes.

<!- Advanced AdSense by Jim Gaudet -><!- google_ad_section_start ->
Managing Cholesterol

Dear Reader,

Before writing theoretical and conceptual fact about cholesterol I am sharing you my own experience. I am a type 2 diabetic along with hypertension.

Few month back my total cholesterol was very high and doctor prescribed me some drugs to control it.

Through my friends i had impression that there are so many side effect of this drug(I can’t say that whether it is true or not).In one of the episode of Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev i heard him claiming that Cholesterol level is being controlled by KapalBhati Prayanam.

Now I have started this prayanaam along with Garlic(Lehsuna) pearls of Ranbaxy. After 20 days i had rechecked my lipid profile and to my surpise all the parameters(LDL,Trglicides , Total Cholestrol etc.) are lower than even Lower prescribed limit.

So my personnel advice to control cholesterol is practice Kapalbhati for 15 minutes daily and garlic(natural or medicine). I am notable to chewing natural pills of garlic that’s why i prefer it in medicine form.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance, also called a lipid, that’s produced by the liver. It’s also found in foods high in saturated fat, like fatty meats, egg yolks, shellfish, and whole-milk dairy products. It’s a vital part of the structure and functioning of our cells. However, too much cholesterol in your blood may lead to a serious, progressive disease of the arteries, called atherosclerosis.
A Closer Look

So how can something your body needs be harmful? Well, not all cholesterol is considered bad. There are actually three main components doctors evaluate when you have a blood test to check your cholesterol. They look at LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, and another substance called triglycerides.

The fact is that cholesterol can be harmful to your health when there’s too much cholesterol in your blood. Whether you have high cholesterol may depend on your lifestyle. Eating a lot of fats and not getting enough exercise can cause cholesterol levels to rise. It’s also, in part, a result of your genetic makeup. Some people inherit genes associated with elevated levels of cholesterol. One type is called familial hypercholesterolemia. People with this genetic makeup can eat a healthy diet and exercise, and still have high cholesterol.

Everyone with high cholesterol needs to keep it under control, but it may be even more important for some groups of people, such as

* People with a family history of early heart disease
* People with high blood pressure
* People with diabetes
* Males over age 45
* Females over age 55
* Smokers
* African Americans
* Hispanic Americans

If you fall into any of the categories above, ask your doctor to discuss how your cholesterol goals may be affected.
What’s Your Cholesterol Goal?

Managing high cholesterol may be different for you depending on your medical history and your health. Your doctor will look at the results of your cholesterol test, also known as a fasting lipid profile, and, using this information along with your medical background, establish a cholesterol goal for you. Always ask what your cholesterol numbers mean, based on your complete health history so you can work together to manage your cholesterol.
Cholesterol Guidelines

National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines recommend that all adults over age 20 have their cholesterol checked at least once every 5 years. Take a look at the guidelines below to get a better idea of where your cholesterol numbers should be.
Total cholesterol level

* Less than 200 mg/dL        * Desirable

* 200-239 mg/dL               * Borderline high

* 240 mg/dL or higher        * High

Total cholesterol is based on your LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) counts. Generally, a lower number is better.
LDL-C

* Less than 100 mg/dL       * Optimal

* 100-129 mg/dL              * Near optimal / above optimal

* 130-159 mg/dL             * Borderline high

* 160-189 mg/dL             * High

* 190 mg/dL or higher    * Very high

LDL-C is considered the “bad” cholesterol because if you have too much LDL-C in your bloodstream, it can lead to the buildup of plaque in your arteries known as atherosclerosis. Generally, lower is better.
HDL-C

* 60 mg/dL or higher             * High

* Less than 40 mg/dL               * Low

HDL-C is considered the “good” cholesterol because it helps return cholesterol to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body. Generally, higher is better.

Triglycerides

* Less than 150 mg/dL            * Normal

* 150-199 mg/dL                    * Borderline high

* 200-499 mg/dL                      * High

* 500 mg/dL or higher              * Very high

Triglycerides, like cholesterol, are another substance that can be dangerous to your health. Like LDL-C, you want to keep your triglycerides low.

Source: National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)

Depending on your overall health profile – which takes into consideration factors such as cigarette smoking, hypertension, low HDL cholesterol, a family history of early heart disease, and age (over 45 for men and over 55 for women) – your doctor may recommend that you have your cholesterol followed more closely.

It’s important to manage your cholesterol and reach your goals because if you don’t, your high cholesterol may contribute to the progression of atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in your arteries.

Perhaps you have said, or heard someone else express, one of these thoughts:

Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.

There are too many rules about choosing foods that are OK in a diabetes diet.

You have to give up all your favorite foods when you’re on a diabetes diet.

These three statements are all myths about diabetes diets. Take a closer look at these and other myths to find out the facts about diabetes and diet.

Diabetes Diet Myth 1: Eating Too Much Sugar Causes Diabetes.

How does diabetes happen? The causes are not totally understood. What is known is that simply eating too much sugar is unlikely to cause diabetes. Instead, diabetes begins when something disrupts your body’s ability to turn the food you eat into energy.

To understand what happens when you have diabetes, keep these things in mind: Your body breaks down much of the food you eat into glucose, a type of sugar needed to power your cells. A hormone called insulin is made in the pancreas. Insulin helps the cells in the body use glucose for fuel.

Here are the most common types of diabetes and what researchers know about their causes:

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot make insulin. Without insulin, glucose piles up in your blood vessels. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin to help the glucose into the cells. Type 1 diabetes often starts in younger people or in children. Researchers believe that it may occur when something goes wrong with the immune system.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not make enough insulin, the insulin does not work properly, or both. Being overweight makes type 2 diabetes more likely to occur. It can happen in a person of any age.

Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy in some women. Hormone changes during pregnancy prevent insulin from working properly. Women with gestational diabetes usually need to take insulin. The condition may resolve after birth of the child.

Diabetes Diet Myth 2: There Are Too Many Rules in a Diabetes Diet.

If you have diabetes, you will need to plan your meals. But the general principal is simple: Following a “diabetes diet” means choosing food that will work along with your activities and any medications to keep your blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.

Will you need to make changes to what you now eat? Probably. But perhaps not as many as you anticipate.

Diabetes Diet Myth 3: Carbohydrates Are Bad.

In fact, carbohydrates are good. They form the foundation of a healthy diabetes diet – or of any healthy diet.

Carbohydrates have the greatest effect on blood glucose levels, which is why you are asked to monitor how much carbohydrate you eat when following a diabetes diet.

However, carbohydrate foods contain many essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber. So one diabetes diet tip is to choose those with the most nutrients, like whole-grain breads and baked goods, and high-fiber fruits and vegetables. You may find it easier to select the best carbs if you meet with a dietitian.

Diabetes Diet Myth 4: Protein is Better than Carbohydrates.

Because carbs affect blood glucose levels so quickly, you may be tempted to eat less of them and substitute more protein. But too much protein may lead to problems for people with diabetes.

The main problem is that many foods rich in protein, such as meat, may also be filled with saturated fat. Eating too much of these fats increases your risk of heart disease. In a diabetes diet, protein should account for about 15% to 20% of the total calories you eat each day.

Diabetes Diet Myth 5: You can Adjust Your Medications to “Cover” Whatever You Eat.

If you use insulin, you may learn how to adjust the amount and type you take to match the amount of food you eat. But this doesn’t mean you can eat as much as you want, then just use more medication to stabilize your glucose level.

If you use other types of diabetes medication, don’t try to adjust your dose to match varying levels of carbohydrates in your meals unless instructed by your doctor. Most diabetes medications work best when they are taken consistently as directed by your doctor.

Diabetes Diet Myth 6: You’ll Need to Give Up Your Favorite Foods.

There is no reason to give up your favorite foods on a diabetes diet. Instead, try:

Changing the way your favorite foods are prepared.

Changing the other foods you usually eat along with your favorite foods.

Reducing the serving sizes of your favorite foods.

Using your favorite foods as a reward for following your meal plans.

A dietitian can help you find ways to include your favorites in your meal plans.

Diabetes Diet Myth 7: You Have to Give Up Desserts.

Not true! You can develop many strategies for including desserts in a diabetes diet. Here are some examples:

Use artificial sweeteners in desserts.

Cut back on the amount of dessert. For example, instead of two scoops of ice cream, have one. Or share a dessert with a friend.

Use desserts as an occasional reward for following your diabetes diet plan.

Make desserts more nutritious. For example, use whole grains, fresh fruit, and vegetable oil when preparing desserts. Many times, you can use less sugar than a recipe calls for without sacrificing taste or consistency.

Expand your dessert horizons. Instead of ice cream, pie, or cake, try fruit, a whole-wheat oatmeal-raisin cookie, or yogurt.

Diabetes Diet Myth 8: Artificial Sweeteners are Dangerous for People with Diabetes.

Artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than the equivalent amount of sugar, so it takes less of them to get the same sweetness found in sugar. This can result in eating fewer calories than when you use sugar.

The American Diabetes Association approves the use of several artificial sweeteners in diabetes diets, including:

Saccharin (Sweet’N Low)

Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal)

Acesulfame potassium (Sunett)

Sucralose (Splenda)

A dietitian can help you determine which sweeteners are best for which uses, whether in coffee, baking, cooking, or other uses.

Diabetes Diet Myth 9: You Need to Eat Special ‘Diabetic Meals.’

The truth is that there really is no such as thing as a “diabetic diet.” The foods that are healthy for people with diabetes are also good choices for the rest of your family. Usually, there is no need to prepare special meals.

The difference between a diabetes diet and your family’s “normal” diet is this: If you have diabetes, you need to monitor what you eat a little more closely. This includes the total amount of calories you consume and the amounts and types of carbohydrates, fats, and protein you eat. A diabetes educator or dietitian can help you learn how to do this.

Diabetes Diet Myth 10: ‘Diet’ Foods Are the Best Choices.

Just because a food is labeled as a “diet” food does not mean it is a better choice for people with diabetes. In fact, “diet” foods can be expensive and no more healthy than foods found in the “regular” sections of the grocery store, or foods you prepare yourself.

As with any food you choose, read the labels carefully to find out if the ingredients and amount of calories are good choices for you. If you have doubts, ask your diabetes educator or a dietitian for advice.

Moving Beyond Diabetes Diet Myths

Now that you know the facts about diabetes diets, you can take steps to learn even more about making wise food choices. Together with exercise and medication, you can use what you eat as an effective tool for keeping your blood glucose levels within normal ranges. That is the best diabetes diet of all.

Prana or the life energy contains of all the powers of the world. It is the biggest medicine. Pranayam purifies the life energy. It increases the oxygen content in the body. The main reason for diseasesis the negative thinking and deficiency of oxygen. Pranayam is the only solution for this and it cures diseases.

The disease arises in the mind of the person, when the person’s thinking becomes negative then it has the direct effect on the respiratory system. The polluted air present inside the body mixes with blood and causes diseases. Medicine can control diseases like cancer for a limited time but the actual cure can be done only with Pranayam. Oxygen is that life energy, which is vital for the life. Its deficiency can be fatal. Life is the game of breathes and the life remains balanced with the balance of breathes. A person who understands this synchronization of breathes leads to healthy and disease free life.
Pranayama is an aspect of Yoga, that deals with breathing. Pranayama is a method of controlling prana or life force through the regulation of breathing. It is the breathing process or the control of the motion of inhalation, exhalation and the retention of vital energy.

Pranayam regulates the movement of breath, it gives peace of mind. When a person keeps Mauna Vrata (does not talk at all) truth gets place in to his heart. The body gets full amount of oxygen with the process of Pranayam, which increases the resistance power of the body. This process balances all the hormones. When the air is thrown out several things are also thrown out and when the air is taken in many things are taken in. The life energy, which is going out and coming in get transformed with the help of Pranayam. It arouses the internal strength of the person and whole body becomes rejuvenated. Seven simple steps of Pranayam supplies oxygen to the body. Pranayam is the Sanjivini (life saver) for life energy; it gives nutrition to the life energy.

<!- Advanced AdSense by Jim Gaudet -><!- google_ad_section_start ->
Work, Home, and Social Life Suffers as a Result of Untreated Depression.

More than one in 20 Americans aged 12 and older are depressed, according to the latest statistics from the CDC.

Of them, 80% report some level of functional impairment because of their illness, with 27% reporting that it is extremely difficult to work, get things done at home, or get along with others because of the symptoms of their depression.

“Reflecting this high rate of functional impairment, almost two-thirds of the estimated $83 billion that depression cost the United States in the year 2000 resulted from lowered productivity and workplace absenteeism,” say study authors Laura A. Pratt, PhD, and Debra J. Brody, MPH, both at the CDC. The authors culled data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005-2006, which comprised a nine-item screening tool asking about depressive symptoms during the past two weeks.

Baby Boomers, Women Hardest Hit by Depression

Rates of depression were higher in women and baby boomers aged 40-59 and non-Hispanic black people than other demographic groups, the study shows. And rates of depression were higher among poor people when compared to people with higher incomes.

A treatment gap also exists. Only 29% of depressed individuals said that they contacted a mental health professional in the past year, and just 39% of people with severe depression contacted a mental health professional in the past year.

Overall, “these numbers are a bit lower than what we’ve seen in the past, but about five or more percent of people are currently depressed — that’s one in 20 people who are impaired by an illness,” says Donald Malone, MD, the section head of adult psychiatric services at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “If any other medical illness affected this many people, it would be a national crisis; but the reality is that depression is looked at differently and we don’t hear those outcries for better treatment.”

The stigma that is still attached to depression may be partially to blame.

“Many people still come in and say ‘depression is not real. It’s a character flaw and people in my family say snap out of it,’” he says. The bottom line? “People will not disclose something they feel stigmatized for.”

Exactly how to lift the stigma associated with depression is a work in progress, he says.

“Continuing to get the word out that this is an illness and something that is treatable with psychotherapy and medications is helpful,” he says. “Depression is something real, not a character flaw or just who you are. It’s an illness and we can make a difference.”

Another tactic, he says, is to approach employers and let them know that one of 20 people working for them is not very productive because he or she is suffering from a treatable illness. This may encourage employers to develop programs that screen for and encourage treatment for depression.
