छोड़इत निकट नयन बह नीरे।।
करनोरि बिलमओ बिमल तरंगे।
पुनि दरसन होए पुनमति गंगे।।
एक अपराध घमब मोर जानी।
परमल माए पाए तुम पानी।।
कि करब जप-तप जोग-धेआने।
जनम कृतारथ एकहि सनाने।।
भनई विद्यापति समदजों तोही।
अन्तकाल जनु बिसरह मोही।।

Vidyapati Thakur (1352? – 1448?), also known by the sobriquet Maithil Kavi Kokil (the poet cuckoo of Maithili) was a Maithili poet and a Sanskrit writer. He was born in the village of Bishphi in Madhubani district of Bihar state, India. He was son of Ganapati. The name Vidyapati is derived from two Sanskrit words, Vidya (knowledge) and Pati (master), connoting thereby, a man of knowledge.

Culture of mithila is known as the best in the world.It is a land of Mandan Mishra,Ayachi,Great Vidyapati and many more.Its culture is very spiritual.In every house there is pandit.But I am unable to understand that why they prefer Non veg like fish.All brahmin of south is non vegeterian.I am requesting to all Maithil bandhu to give light on this issue.

Vidyapati’s poetry was widely influential in centuries to come, in the Hindustani as well as Bengali and other Eastern literary traditions. Indeed, the language at the time of Vidyapati, the prakrit-derived late abahatta, had just began to transition into early versions of the Eastern languages, Bengali, Oriya, Maithili, etc. Thus, Vidyapati’s influence on making these languages has been described as “analogous to that of Dante in Italy and Chaucer in England.”

विद्यापति शिव एवं शक्ति दोनों के प्रबल भक्त थे। शक्ति के रुप में उन्होंने दुर्गा, काली, भैरवि, गंगा, गौरी आदि का वर्णन अपनी रचनाओं में यथेष्ठ किया है। मिथिला के लोगों में यह बात आज भी व्याप्त है कि जब महाकवि

विद्यापति काफी उम्र के होकर रुग्न हो गए तो अपने पुत्रों और परिजनों को बुलाकर यह आदेश दिया:

“अब मैं इस शरीर का त्याग करना चाहता हूँ। मेरी इच्छा है कि मैं गंगा के किनारे गंगाजल को स्पर्श करता हुआ अपने दीर्ध जीवन का अन्तिम सांस लूं। अत: आप लोग मुझे गंगालाभ कराने की तैयारी में लग जाएं। कहरिया को बुलाकर उस पर बैठाकर आज ही हमें सिमरिया घाट (गंगातट) ले चलें।”

अब परिवार के लोगों ने महाकवि का आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए चार कहरियों को बुलाकर महाकवि के जीर्ण शरीर को पालकी में सुलाकर सिमरिया घाट गंगालाभ कराने के लिए चल पड़े – आगे-आगे कहरिया पालकी लेकर और पीछे-पीछे उनके सगे-सम्बन्धी। रात-भर चलते-चलते जब सूर्योदय हुआ तो विद्यापति ने पूछा: “भाई, मुझे यह तो बताओं कि गंगा और कितनी दूर है?”

“ठाकुरजी, करीब पौने दो कोस।” कहरियों ने जवाब दिया। इस पर आत्मविश्वास से भरे महाकवि यकाएक बोल उठे: “मेरी पालकी को यहीं रोक दो। गंगा यहीं आएंगी।”

“ठाकुरजी, ऐसा संभव नहीं है। गंगा यहाँ से पौने दो कोस की दूरी पर बह रही है। वह भला यहाँ कैसे आऐगी? आप थोड़ी धैर्य रक्खें। एक घंटे के अन्दर हम लोग सिमरिया घाट पहुँच जाएंगे।”

“नहीं-नहीं, पालकी रोके” महाकवि कहने लगे, “हमें और आगे जाने की जरुरत नहीं। गंगा यहीं आएगी। आगर एक बेटा जीवन के अन्तिम क्षण में अपनी माँ के दर्शन के लिए जीर्ण शरीर को लेकर इतने दूर से आ रहा है तो क्या गंगा माँ पौने दो कोस भी अपने बेटे से मिलने नहीं आ सकती? गंगा आएगी और जरुर आएगी।”

इतना कहकर महाकवि ध्यानमुद्रा में बैठ गए। पन्द्रह-बीस मिनट के अन्दर गंगा अपनी उफनती धारा के प्रवाह के साथ वहाँ पहुँच गयी। सभी लोग आश्चर्य में थे। महाकवि ने सर्वप्रथम गंगा को दोनों हाथ जोड़कर प्रणाम किया, फिर जल में प्रवेश कर निम्नलिखित गीत की रचना की:

इस गंगा स्तुति का अर्थ कुछ इस प्रकार स्पष्ट किया जा सकता है:

“हे माँ पतित पावनि गंगे, तुम्हारे तट पर बैठकर मैंने संसार का अपूर्व सुख प्राप्त किया। तुम्हारा सामीप्य छोड़ते हुए अब आँखों से आँसू बह रहे हैं। निर्मल तरंगोवानी पूज्यमती गंगे! मैं कर जोड़ कर तुम्हारी विनती करता हूँ कि पुन: तुम्हारे दर्शन हों।”

ठमेरे एक अपराध को जानकर भी समा कर देना कि हे माँ! मैंने तुम्हें अपने पैरों से स्पर्श कर दिया। अब जप-तप, योग-ध्यान की क्या आवश्यकता? एक ही स्नान में मेरा जन्म कृतार्थ हो गया। विद्यापति तुमसे (बार-बार) निवेदन करते है कि मृत्यु के समय मुझे मत भूलना।”
